FEELING UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN YOU GO AFTER YOUR GOALS
Have you ever decided to start a goal, you get all excited, but then a couple days/weeks in the excitement wears off and you start to realize this might be more difficult then you thought? This is the time that most people stop going after their goals. When reality sets in and the motivation from the excitement stops. But what if you plan for this to happen? What if you know you are going to feel uncomfortable when starting new goals so you put together a plan to help yourself succeed?
Feeling Uncomfortable Is Normal
I remember when I would start a new goal I would always create a plan. I think I enjoyed creating the plan more than actually wanting to accomplish the goal. Then two days in when I didn’t follow the plan perfectly I would scratch the plan and create a new one. I want to let you know that when you are starting a new goal feeling uncomfortable or having days when you don’t want to do the steps needed to accomplish your goal are completely normal.
There will always be days you don’t feel like it. The difference between the people who succeed at their goals and those who do not are the people who succeed still take action on their goal even when they don’t feel like it. They do not let their feelings get in the way of accomplishing their goals, and they choose the goal and long term health and happiness over how they are feeling at that moment.
Making Uncomfortable Okay
It is time to make a plan for when you do not feel like it. When creating this plan I would like you to already assume you are not going to feel like it at least 80% of the time. The reason this is so high is that you are trying to accomplish something new. It is not a habit yet and it is going to take conscious effort to push through the times you don’t feel like it.
For me, my goal is to work out more. I knew I could make time in the evenings, but I didn’t realize how tired I would be at the end of the day. In the past, I used to go home and relax, but now I have to push through being tired and get to the gym. My desire to go home is the habit I am used to and it is the biggest struggle that is standing in between me and my goal.
Pushing Through Uncomfortable
When it comes to your goal start to be conscious of all the reasons/fears that come up for why you can’t accomplish it. Like in my earlier example many times I would think “I am too tired right now to go to the gym.” What comes up for you? Are you making your goal too hard? I would like you to make your goal as easy as possible to accomplish. Make your goal so easy it is hard for you to say no to accomplishing it.
I now always keep at least one set of gym clothes in my car. This eliminates one excuse I would use for not accomplishing my goal. I also break down my goal into small manageable pieces. If I really don’t feel like going to the gym, I will tell myself just to drive there and if I still don’t feel like it, I can go home. Every time I do this I always end up getting out of my car and going into the gym.
How can you break down your goal? What plan can you have in place for the days you don’t feel like it? How can you start to be more disciplined to say yes when you want to say no? Put this plan together to help you accomplish your goals. Know that you will feel uncomfortable when starting new goals, and be prepared to help yourself through it.
