Episode #30: Tips To Help You Recover From Burnout

Read or Listen

Hey there, welcome back to the Owner Confidence Podcast! I'm beyond excited to be back with you all, and today's episode is going to be a real talk about burnout. But before we dive in, I want to give you a little life update and share why I had to hit pause on the podcast for a while. So, get ready to hear about my journey through burnout and the valuable lessons I learned along the way.

Life Update and The Road to Burnout

Let's rewind to last summer when I was juggling my full-time job and traveling for work specifically to Columbus, Ohio. I must say, exploring the different neighborhoods of Columbus was an unexpectedly healing experience. However, the constant back-and-forth between Columbus and Pittsburgh began to take its toll. I found myself feeling exhausted, burnt out, and in desperate need of a break.

In September, I decided to cut back on traveling, but things took an unexpected turn when a colleague left the company in October. Suddenly, I found myself doing two full-time jobs and even had to train the new hire. This added responsibility overwhelmed me, and by February, I was struggling to keep up. Sleep and work became my never-ending cycle.

The Power of Asking for Help

Throughout my burnout journey, I realized that one of the most important lessons I learned was how to ask for help. Now, if you're anything like me—an independent go-getter—it can be tough to admit that we can't do it all on our own. But here's the thing: burnout is not something you can just push through or hope will magically go away. It's like being sick and it requires intentional treatment. That's where asking for help comes in. Asking for help can remove the overwhelm you are trying to work through while being burned out.

Finding Your Support System

Discovering who you can turn to for support is crucial when you're healing burnout. Personally, I have a best friend who speaks my emotional language. When I'm struggling, she provides validation and a safe space to process my feelings. It's essential to identify those individuals in your life who can offer the support you need. Whether it's friends, family members, or even seeking out a new community, having a strong support system is vital during your recovery.

Rethinking Rest: Embracing Intentional Self-Care

Ah, rest—something I used to associate with laziness. It's time to redefine our relationship with rest. During burnout, intentional rest becomes your lifeline. It's not about being lazy; it's about recognizing the value of self-care. Resting, both physically and mentally, is crucial for your recovery. It's okay to take a break, to allow yourself the time and space to recharge. Embrace intentional rest as an essential part of your journey towards a healthier, more balanced life.

Remember, it's okay to ask for help, even if it feels uncomfortable. Build a support system of people who understand and validate your emotions. Embrace the power of intentional rest and self-care.

XO,

Ellie Curry
